The Unsung Heroes: Terna SpA’s Efforts to Keep Italy’s Lights On
Italy’s electricity grid operator, Terna SpA, has found itself at the center of controversy. As consumers face mounting costs, the company continues to receive bonuses. However, the Italian government staunchly defends this practice, asserting that Terna’s contributions to cost-cutting and power supply stability warrant these rewards.
Terna SpA’s role in Italy’s power grid cannot be understated. The company’s optimization interventions have proven instrumental in averting potential blackouts and minimizing the expenses associated with the so-called ‘dispatch’ market. Vannia Gava, the deputy minister for the environment and energy security, emphasized that without Terna’s efforts, the cost of the dispatching service would have nearly doubled in 2022.
While critics argue that consumers bear the brunt of these rising costs, it is important to acknowledge the challenges faced by Terna. High gas prices have made it increasingly difficult to further reduce expenses. Despite this, Terna’s grid improvements and strategic trading maneuvers have helped mitigate the impact on consumers.
A Bloomberg News investigation shed light on the profits reaped by Italian power companies during the Covid-19 lockdown. However, the attempt to address these windfalls inadvertently led to higher expenses for consumers. In 2022, consumers incurred an additional €692 million in costs, while Terna received bonuses amounting to €334.7 million for its cost-cutting initiatives.
In response to these findings, lawmaker Enrico Cappelletti demanded a review of consumer costs and Terna’s bonuses. While Cappelletti expressed concern over the lack of savings on bills for consumers, it is crucial to consider the bigger picture. Terna’s actions have helped prevent even higher costs, given the challenging circumstances of high gas prices.
