Banish Garlic Breath with Natural Yogurt
Do you ever find yourself feeling self-conscious after enjoying a flavorful dish of garlic bread or a tasty chicken kiev? Well, the solution to your garlic breath woes may be simpler than you think. According to researchers, eating natural yogurt can help neutralize the pungent smell of garlic on your breath.
A team of scientists from Ohio State University made an intriguing discovery about the proteins found in whole-milk plain yogurt. These proteins have the remarkable ability to neutralize the sulfur-based compounds that cause the unpleasant odor of garlic.
To conduct their study, the researchers placed equal amounts of raw garlic in glass bottles and added different types of yogurt with varying fat, protein, and water content. The results were astonishing, as the yogurt proved to be 99% effective in reducing the major odor-producing compounds of garlic.
Further analysis revealed that yogurts with high protein levels and high butter fat content were the most effective in combating garlic smells. Dr. Sheryl Barringer, the senior author of the study, commented on the findings, saying, ‘High protein is a very hot thing right now. Generally, people want to eat more protein. An unintended side benefit may be a high-protein formulation that could be advertised as a breath deodorizer in addition to its nutritional claims. We know proteins bind flavor… in this case, it could be a positive.’
Interestingly, the researchers also tested yogurt’s ‘deodorizing’ effects on fried garlic. However, they discovered that frying the garlic significantly reduced most of its odor-causing volatile compounds anyway. This led Dr. Barringer and her team to believe that their study could serve as a foundation for exploring different proteins that could potentially be used to create the perfect garlic-breath eradication product.
While further research is needed, Dr. Barringer suggests that Greek yogurt, which has a higher protein value than whole milk plain yogurt, may be the most effective option for banishing garlic breath. Flavored yogurts are also likely to work, but it’s important to consume the yogurt shortly after consuming garlic for optimal results.
In the meantime, if you find yourself in a situation where garlic breath is a concern, remember to have your garlic and eat the yogurt right away. Say goodbye to garlic breath and hello to fresh, confident conversations!
